Zoom In from i love dirt

Here is an activity from i love dirt! by Jennifer Ward.

Nature is all around us, but we often miss much of it. This activity has you and your kids looking closely at a little part of the world and trying to notice the small stuff.

Zoom In
For this activity, select a spot the size of your child's footprint in nature, and seek out animal and plant life in this tiny realm. You might select a spot in a field, a space on a tree trunk, a patch of lawn, a crack in the sidewalk, or the area under a rock.

Look closely at your spot, discuss what you discover and compare different areas. Ward suggests using a magnifying glass, which I think is a great idea. Kids love using tools! If you find something particularly interesting--like a slug, mushroom or a strange leaf--take notes so you can look it up when you get home.
