Make a snow gauge
I've shared a lot of ideas for creating a weather station here on Your Wild Child. (Links at the bottom.) Now it is time to add a snow gauge.
What's the difference between a rain gauge and a snow gauge, you ask? Not much, except the obvious: one collects snow and the other collects rain. It's what you do with the gauge that's important.
Follow up:
Grab a coffee can or other container. Tape a ruler perpendicular and inside the can. Put it outside before a storm and wait for it to fill with snow. If you are fancy and crafty, you can make it look like a snowman.
After a storm, measure the amount of snow and write down the results. Then bring the can inside, let the snow melt and measure the amount of water. Discuss.
Here in the Rockies our snow is DRY. Which makes for awesome skiing, but not much water in our snow. Easterners probably get a lot more water out of their snowpack.
If you live somewhere without snow (I'm sorry
) perhaps you can find a friend, relative or online buddy to exchange precipitation results with.

We are keeping a weather journal and look forward to make comparisons once we get a couple years worth.
