3 things we are thinking about and doing

by melynda Email

I've read a few things lately that really hit home for me. I'd like to share them with you.

Follow up:

Damien at Adventure in Progress wrote a piece about choosing one day a week to be outside as a family. I think this is one of the most important things to do.

He wrote, "Imagine if you could combine family relationship building, health, fitness, spiritual growth, fresh air, home schooling, fun, environmentalism, leadership training, and much more into a single activity. Imagine if you did all of that in one day and it all ended with an incredibly satisfied feeling and a bunch of tired, contented kids."

We take one weekend day to hike, ski or play in hot springs. I think it is the most important thing we do all week. It's a lot of prep time for me and my husband. The night before we are packing all our gear, pulling out appropriate clothes (and back up clothes), making lunches, filling water bottles, checking out maps and guidebooks etc. It is always worth it. Check out the tips Damien gives for making this day a priority.

Debi at Go Explore Nature shared her experience with a winter scavenger hunt. I am a big fan of scavenger hunts and other trail games, and immediately printed the list and took the boys on a walk around our neighborhood.

We found a smooth rock on the scavenger hunt. Quick, throw it in the creek!

At Se7en they are doing all sorts of fun experiments related to Bugs, Birds and Beasts. As soon as it warms up enough around here we'll be putting orange peels in the garden to see who shows up.

What's caught your attention lately?

I so agree with making one day a week a time for the family to be together outdoors. And, yes, some times it takes a lot of effort. But I feel so connected during our special days that it's always worth it. We're building memories that we'll all have with us forever, too. Thanks for mentioning the scavenger hunt post - glad you guys enjoyed yourselves, too.

It's very cool to see the families who like to spend regular time together outdoors come out of the woodwork.

Thanks for posting the link!
